Berhane Adere
ETHIOPIA
GEBURTSDATUM:
21 Juli 1973
PERSÖNLICHES BESTES:
2:21:52 (London, 2006)
KARRIERE-ANMERKUNGEN:
Adere has had a fine record over the years, but in 2002 emerged from the shadows of her compatriots Gete Wami and Derartu Tulu to take center stage, running a world indoor record for 3,000m (8:29.15) and winning the World Half Marathon title, after placing third in the event in 2001. She went on to have a stellar track season with four Golden League wins as well as the African 5,000m and World Cup 3,000m. In 2003, she won the World Indoor 3,000m, and set an African 5,000m record of 14:29.32 at Oslo, just 1.23 outside the World Record. She ran a wonderful race for the World 10,000m title, when her 30:04.18 was the third fastest ever and took 13.31 seconds off Derartu Tulu’s African record. She then posted a personal best in the half marathon (67:32) to earn second in the Great North Run. She set another world indoor record with 14:39.29 in the 5,000m in 2004, but was bested by Meseret Defar for the World Indoor 3,000m title.
Probably the favorite for the 10,000m, the Ethiopian authorities withdrew her from their Olympic team citing loss of form. Intensely disappointed, she went on to win the 5,000m at the Berlin GP a couple of weeks after the Games. Back on the national team, she took the 10,000m silver medal at the 2005 World Championships and was the African champion in the 1993 10,000m following that up with the World Championships in 1995. She went out that year in her heat, but has subsequently been fourth in 1997 (in a PR 31:48.95), seventh in 1999 (PR 31:32.51) and second in 2001, when she was just 0.04 behind Tulu. At the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games she was 18th and 12th in the 5,000m and 10,000m, and in 1998 she was the African champion and third at the World Cup. Other best times: 1,500m 4:05.54i (2002); 2,000m 5:35.62 (2003), 3,000m 8:25.62 (2001).
Adere kept the women’s field in check during an outstanding marathon debut in London in 2006 finishing just seconds ahead of Galina Bogomolova to place fourth in 2:21:52.
