CAREER NOTES:
Cherigat’s most important win came in the 2004 Boston Marathon when he raced against a seasoned field, which included two former champions He was able to break up the lead pack and then run to an uncontested finish.
He has run at Boston three times since, twice finishing in sixth place.
Cherigat had the second best World Marathon Majors performance of his career at Chicago in 2008, placing third.
PERSONAL NOTES:
Cherigat is employed by the Kenyan Navy and was promoted to corporal and given an award by the Kenyan President after his 2004 Boston victory. Cherigat is married with a daughter Isabella and son Timothy and lives in Chepkorio, which is located just outside of Eldoret. His traditional diet of ugali, chicken stew, rice, and kale helps fuel his high mileage running. He enjoys reading, gospel music, and volunteering with his church. Sometimes he even preaches at his church. Dieter Hogen is his coach, and he trains with teammates in Iten, Kenya, and Boulder, Colorado.
