At the 1999 Venice Marathon, Genovese finished her debut race by placing third with a 2:31:06 Olympic “A” qualifying time even though she was only scheduled to run 30K.

She has enjoyed great success at the Tokyo International Women's Marathon. After a third place in 2001 and fourth in 2003, she earned her only career marathon victory with a 2:26:34 there in 2004. That year she was also second in Rome and 10th at the Olympics. She returned in 2007 to earn another podium position in third.

Genovese turned in two solid 2005 marathon performances with her third in Boston and fifth in New York City. In the half marathon, she was the Italian Half Marathon Champion in 2005 and also won the Cremona Half Marathon in a PR 1:11:22.

For the second consecutive year Genovese recorded a top-five finish at Boston in 2006, placing fourth with a new personal best of 2:25:28. She was also fifth at that summer's European Championships.

She ran her second Olympic marathon in 2008 and got back into the scoring column in the World Marathon Majors with a fifth at Boston in 2010.
