CAREER NOTES:
Madai Perez Carrillo of Txalcala, Mexico has pushed her tiny 5’2” frame to the top of international track and road competitions since 1999. That year, Perez ran a reputable 1:12:27 half marathon at Monterrey. Four years later Perez Carrillo won the same event in 1:11:51 before making her marathon debut at The 2003 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon where she clocked 2:31:34 to place 12th.
In 2004, Perez Carrillo finished second at the Rotterdam Marathon in 2:27:08, a time which made her the second fastest marathoner in Latin American history—second only to Adriana Fernandez (2:24:06 in 1999 ). In October of the same year, she clocked a 1:10:55 first half in the ING New York City Marathon, but faded to ninth after relinquishing the fast pace to finish in 2:29:57.
Perez Carrillo finished 11th at the 2005 IAAF World Championships Marathon with a personal best 2:26:50. Last October she challenged an aggressive international field at the IAAF World Championships Half Marathon as the first Mexican woman to compete in the event since 2000. The maturing athlete set a new personal best to place sixth behind several world class athletes including champion Constantina Tomescu-Dita.
Under the guidance of famed Mexican athlete German Silva, Perez Carrillo’s ultimate goal is to compete in the 2008 Olympic Games. She has revved-up her speed training since 2005 to reduce her marathon time and contend at an elite level. In 2006 she set new personal bests at 5000m (15:57.86) and 10,000m (32:22.09) and won the 5000m Bronze Medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games. That September she set a course record at the high altitude Atlas Colomos 21K in Guadalajara in a 1:13:33 victory.
At The 2006 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon, Perez Carrillo lowered her personal best to 2:22:59 to place fourth, establishing a new Mexican record in the process. She went up to third place at Boston last April, posting a fine 2:30:16 despite strong wind and rain.
PERSONAL NOTES:
Perez-Carillo is married to world-class marathoner Odilon Cuahutle and at the 2006 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon they combined for a record husband-wife time of 4:41:42. Cuahutle ran 2:18:43 in that race but earlier in 2006 posted a PR of 2:16:44 in Los Angeles. They have a 5-year old son. Perez studied physical education in college and trains with former New York City Marathon winner German Silva.
