Catherine McKiernan at the start of the BERLIN-MARATHON in 1997 - later she set a new debut world record of 2:23:44
In 1998 Ronaldo da Costa (Brasil) became the first runner to run a marathon with an average pace of over 20 k per hour, less than three minutes for every kilometre. He set a new world record, clocking 2:06:05 hours.
Naoko Takahashi (Japan) set a historical mark in Berlin – she was the first woman ever to clock sub 2:20. In a new world record of 2:19:46 she won the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON in 2001.
Since 2003 the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON finish is just behind the Brandenburg Gate, the major landmark of the whole of Germany. It was here where the Berlin wall once divided the city into east and west.
Since 2005 Mizuki Noguchi (Japan) is the current course record holder of the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON. In 2:19:12 she did not only set the fastest time in Berlin but improved the Asian record as well.
