In 2002, Galina Bogomolova began to work her way towards elite running status with exceptional times at both the European Cross-Country Championships and Brussels International Cross, placing second and first respectively.
2003 brought better results and a personal record for Bogomolova. The 25-year-old earned victories at the European Indoor Cup and Russian Championship meets in the 10,000m leading up to a personal best at the IAAF World Championships 10,000m in Paris (30:26:20).
She set a 5000m PR of 14:59.72 in July 2004, but at the Olympic Games in Athens she finished 22nd in the 10,000m. 2005 brought redemption with a win in the Russian 10K Road Championship, a personal best 8:42.03 in the 3000m and a World Championship qualification victory at the Russian Championships. Bogomolova bettered her Athens performance at the IAAF World Championships, but her 30:33.75 was only enough to earn an eighth-place finish. She continued to showcase her developing athleticism with a personal record in the IAAF World Championships Half Marathon placing fourth in 1:10:34. Her marathon debut in Las Vegas in December of that year resulted in a 2:31:54 second-place finish.
In 2006, Bogomolova moved into world-class caliber in her second marathon at the 2006 Flora London Marathon. She stayed with the leaders, including eventual winner Deena Kastor, and finished fifth in an impressive 2:21:58. That made her the third fastest Russian of all-time, less than 30 seconds behind Lyudmila Petrova (2:21:29) and Svetlana Zakharova (2:21:31).
In August, Bogomolova finished fourth at the 2006 European Championships 10,000m in 30:35.90. Bogomolova then improved upon her London performance with a 2:20:47 personal record as she placed second at The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon, setting a new Russian record in the process.
