CAREER NOTES:

Umeki went through the 2:10 barrier in handsome style when Paul Tergat broke the World Record at Berlin in 2006. Performances at his other marathons since haven’t been at quite the same level, but Umeki has been running consistent times at 10,000m on the track and for the road half-marathon, including a 62:09 for the half-marathon this year, only four seconds outside his best from 2002. He’s been a member of national teams for the latter, helping Japan take silver at the World Championships Half Marathon in Brussels four years ago. Rotterdam this year gave a hint that he was approaching the form of Berlin 2003.

Umeki placed third in the 2006 real,- Berlin Marathon with a finish time of 2:13:43.

His next marathon was at Otsu, Japan in March, 2007, but he did not finish.

PERSONAL NOTES:

Umeki was a graduate of Waseda University and currently lives in Hiroshima. In Japan he competes for the Chugoku Electric team.
