PERSONAL NOTES:
Venturing into the unknown can pay off. It did for Kosgei in Paris two years ago, pulling away from Ethiopia’s Asha Gigi after the two had been together for the first 31k. Since then her marathon ascent has stalled somewhat, certainly in terms of running faster than her debut. But her performance in winning the Commonwealth 10,000m title four years ago shows she can beat top-quality athletes. In Manchester she went clear of fellow Kenyan Susan Chepkemei, twice a runner-up in New York, to break the Commonwealth Games record of Scotland’s Liz McColgan, who subsequently turned from the track to the road with great success.
Most recently, Kosgei set a new personal record on the 2006 real,- BERLIN MARATHON course with a 2:23:22 finish time.
