CAREER NOTES:
Brian Sell achieved a lifelong dream in November 2007 when he finished third at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials making him a member of the team that will compete in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Sell's professional career began in earnest in 2002 when he was a member of the USA squad for the Chiba Ekiden Relay and he qualified for the USA Track & Field Championships Indoor and Outdoor. He also finished third at the USA Track & Field Fall Cross-Country Championships, eighth at the USA Track & Field Championships 10K Road, fourth at the USA Track & Field Championships 7 Mile Road Race, and 39th at the World Half Marathon.
In 2003, Sell finished eighth at the USA Track & Field Championships 8K Road, second at the USA Track & Field Championships 20K Road with the fifth fastest American 20K time ever (59:18), and 25th place (first American finisher) at the IAAF World Championships Half Marathon.
In February 2004, Sell finished 13th at the USA Olympic Marathon Trials after a solo break to lead the race until mile 21.
Sell displayed considerable strength and maturity in both marathon and half marathon events in 2006. In January, he became the U.S. National Champion as he posted a personal best 1:02:39 in the U.S. Half Marathon Championships behind winner Nicodemus Malakwen of Kenya. In April, Sell excelled at Boston in 2:10:55 to finish fourth overall and the second American in his second personal record performance of the year.
Six months later Sell lowered his personal record yet again, placing sixth at The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon with a time of 2:10:47.
PERSONAL NOTES:
Brian Sell was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania and went to North Bedford County High School in Loysburg. He went to Messiah College and Saint Francis. He currently lives in Rochester, Mich. and is a member of the Hanson-Brooks Distance Project team.
