It marked the first time Shami did not cross the finish line first as he had won five previous marathons, including a 2:07:19 at Paris in April and the 2006 Asian Games title in Doha.

Shami is perhaps best known for the dramatic finish at the 2005 IAAF Half-Marathon World Championships where he raised his arms to celebrate a victory with less than five meters to go, only to get passed by Fabiano Joseph and lose by one second.
