CAREER NOTES:
Although Vincent Kipruto ran an impressive 2:08:16 in his marathon debut at Reims, France in October 2008, few could have expected his astonishing result at Paris six months later.
Kipruto went through the halfway point of the Paris International Marathon in 1:02:47, far faster than he had ever run before. Sticking with the lead pack through 25km (1:14:20) and 30km (1:29:27), Kipruto refused to fall back. Instead, heading through the Bois de Boulogne in the last 3km, he dropped his final competitor and surged to the finish in 2:05:47, breaking the previous course record by 46 seconds. That made him the 13th fastest marathoner in history at the time.
At Chicago on October 11 Kipruto went out even faster. Sticking with the leaders and pacers he went through the half in 1:02:01 and 25km in 1:13:40 (2:04:21 pace). While he couldn't maintain that speed to the finish, he still wound up third in 2:06:08, Chicago's fastest third place finish ever.
Bypassing a defense of his Paris title in April 2010, Kipruto headed to Rotterdam. Just off world record pace through halfway, the furious pace of his fellow Kenyans and some pesky headwinds slowed him in the second half, but not enough to prevent him from scoring another personal record of 2:05:13 in third place.
Kipruto's first race in 2009 was a fourth place 1:06:01 at the Halve-Marathon von Egmond in January. After the Paris Marathon he won again at the La Corsa Piu' Antica 11K in July.
