CAREER NOTES:

Inexperience with the final turn at the 2012 Boston Marathon may have cost her victory there as Caroline Cherop accelerated quickly to pull away. Despite a valiant effort, Jelagat Sumgong came up a few seconds shy in her first WMM competition.

The winner of two previous marathons and always in the top five, Sumgong has been competing on the roads internationally since 2004. At the end of 2011 she improved her personal best marathon time by more than a minute at the Castellon Marathon.

In 2010 she finished runner up at the San Blas Half Marathon in 1:15:34 and fifth at the Berlin Half Marathon in 1:11:25.

On the U.S. road racing circuit she was the winner of the 2005 Ogden 20K and the 2006 Cleveland 10K, and finished third at the 2007 Azalea Trail Run and the 2006 Utica Boilermaker.

PERSONAL NOTES:

Sumgong trains with Dr. Gabriele Rosa’s group in Kenya. She was formerly based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
