CAREER NOTES:
The real,-Berlin Marathon has been special to Yae as he finished fourth in 2006 and ran a near personal best of 2:12:07 there in 2005. And his performance there in 2004 was nothing short of incredible.
Even though he had run 2:11:45 in China earlier in the year, Yae was assigned a number that placed him in a starting pen well behind the rest of the elites. He had to weave in and out of the mass participants, not passing 5 km until 19:11 and at 10 km he was still outside of 35 minutes. The Berlin organizers calculated that he passed more than 9100 runners and still finished 26th.
Yae would also have to consider P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll marathon in Arizona as another special race. He won in 2005, was second in 2006 and began 2007 with his second career marathon victory there.
He decided to bypass Berlin in the fall of 2007 and compete instead at Amsterdam where he placed 15th in 2:13:41.
