CAREER NOTES:
Philip Manyim often served as a steeplechase pace-maker on the European track circuit so his first marathon was a rather unremarkable 2:18:17 thirteenth place at Amsterdam in 2004. But when he devoted his training full-time to marathoning he exploded into world prominence.
He ran a thrilling battle against Alberico Di Cecco at the 2005 Rome Marathon and it was only in the final drive to the finish that the Italian got away to prevail by five seconds 2:08:02 to 2:08:07. Manyim did not finish the Prague Marathon a few months later, but atoned for that at Berlin in September.
He surged away from the competition at 30 kilometers and within 10 kilometers had extended his lead to 50 seconds. Manyim romped to a 1:17 victory in a personal best 2:07:41, equal to the eighth fastest time in the world for 2005.
In 2006 he finished third at the Joon Ang Seoul International Marathon in 2:09:35.
Manyim suffered through an 18th place finish at Boston 2007 but bounced back with a solid 2:08:01 fourth place at Berlin in September.
PERSONAL NOTES:
Manyim is from the Usain Gishu region of the North Rift Valley in Kenya and is married with a daughter and a son. He became a marathoner because of his friend and former Boston Marathon champion Moses Tanui.
