CAREER NOTES:
Svetlana Zakharova became the first Russian to win two majors in one year back in 2003. She joined countrywoman Olga Markova as a Boston champion that April and then at Chicago in October she was the first Russian to triumph there.
Chicago had also been a good race for her in 2002. Although she ran the fastest fourth place time in history (2:21:31), it was a Russian national record at the time and remains her personal best. She also set a Russian record of 2:22:31 at London the previous April.
Zakharova has been a winner at the Honolulu Marathon twice (1997 and 2002). She was also second there in 1996 and had four more consecutive runner-up placings from 1998-2001.
Despite a layoff for the birth of her first child, Zakharova had a strong effort at the 2008 Flora London Marathon. She pushed eventual winner Irina Mikitenko until the final miles and came in second in 2:24:39, her third runner-up placing there.
PERSONAL NOTES:
Svetlana Vasilyeva was born in Atayeva, Chuvashiya. Her husband, Nikolay Zakharov, was an international class cross-country skier.
