CARA connects runners to resources that
enable them to run further, faster, better, for life.
We are excited about our NEW Youth Initiative Program that we are launching Spring 2008.
The money raised will support an innovative intervention program that challenges teens to train for and complete a 26.2-mile marathon. The program is based on a long running and highly successful program that began in Los Angeles in 1989. This program is coming to our community through the support of Chicago Area Runners Association.
So what does this mean for Chicago?
It means that we have a new way to tackle the problem of dropout and truancy. It means we have a new strategy for improving the health of the youth in Chicago. It means we can bring hope to many kids in our community who are aimless and at risk of losing their way. And it means we need some seed funding to get the project off the ground.
In L.A., more than 20,000 young people have participated, and not only have 90% of them completed the entire race - more than 95% of those who crossed the finish line have gone on to graduate from high school. Students who participate not only see dramatic improvements in their health and wellness; they see a complete turnaround in their self esteem and prospects for the future. The program has been rigorously evaluated and the results are truly astounding!
