For over a decade ReadBoston has been driven by our mission to have children in Boston reading on grade level by the time they complete third grade. Founded by Mayor Thomas M. Menino in 1995 to address low literacy levels among Boston’s youth, ReadBoston has since grown into a city-wide leader in the field of early literacy.
Funds raised from the Marathon will be used to support our 2007 Summer Storymobile program. ReadBoston partners with 100 community-based organizations to bring the Storymobile program to over 28,000 children throughout Boston. Each week a professional storyteller accompanies the Storymobile to each program, providing interactive storytelling and free books.
The Storymobile program further enhances the work of ReadBoston and our mission to have all children in Boston reading at grade level by the third grade. Through this program, the importance of reading outside the classroom is reinforced. Research shows that the amount of time spent reading outside school correlates positively with a child’s success in school. The Storymobile’s transportability enables the program to reach children in their neighborhoods with their families.
Join the ReadBoston Marathon Team and help bring reading alive to even more kids this summer.
