10 Greatest Marathon Moments of 2023: #7 10,000 Six Star finishers, and we feel like we’re only getting started!

7: 10,000 Six Star finishers, and we feel like we’re only getting started!

In March, we welcomed our 10,000th member to the Six Star Finisher Hall of Fame.

On a cloudy day in downtown Tokyo, somewhere within the maelstrom of finishers, we passed the landmark number at the same time as setting a new Guinness World Record of over 3,000 runners receiving their Six Star medal at a single marathon.

38,000 athletes set off at the start of the 2023 Tokyo Marathon.

2023 was a phenomenal year of growth for Abbott World Marathon Majors. We introduced new ways for our athletes to gain places at races, with our virtual Road To The Majors series. We also saw more people join our Global Run Club than any year previously.

What started out as a pandemic-driven solution to engage our audience while racing was suspended, has grown into a community of similarly-minded athletes who push themselves, and each other, every month past greater challenges.

More than 3,000 athletes completed their Six Star journey in Tokyo.

While the numbers taking part in our Major races continued to grow, we also welcomed more  events to our AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group World Rankings, which now numbers over 350 races across six continents, offering runners from around the world the opportunity to take part in our AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group World Championships.

Following the success of our Championships in Chicago and London, 2024 sees us head Down Under and we are so excited to see the progress that our Candidate races have made on their journey towards joining our growing family.

Already more than 2,000 athletes have confirmed they will be Set For No. 6 in 2024.

As we look towards 2024, we could see our 15,000th Six Star finisher collecting their medal in Boston. We cannot wait to hear the stories and see the smiling faces of those we are fortunate to share this journey with.
