2022 Highlight #1 | Kipchoge smashes world record in Berlin

There could be only one moment to conclude our 2022 list, our biggest highlight of the year, the greatest achievement our sport has ever seen. 25th September 2022 will go down in history as the day that The Greatest Road Runner in history reached the very pinnacle of his sport.

In the process of shattering his own world record, Eliud Kipchoge elevated himself above the pantheon of great marathon runners. His performance in Berlin on that fall day will outlive us all. Or at least until he does it again.

Eliud Kipchoge breaks the world record for the marathon.

From the very start, we knew we were about to witness something special. Kipchoge set a searing pace in the first half of the race, clocking 59:51 at halfway to put him on course for an improbable sub-two-hour time in an official race.

It was only in the final 5km that the chances of incredible feat began to fade, but when he stopped the clock in a barely believable 2:01:09, the crowd erupted from underneath the Brandenburg Gate having witnessed the greatest marathon runner of all time take a whopping 30 seconds off his own record.

What made the achievement so remarkable was that it wasn’t even an accident. Speaking after the race, the 37-year-old said: “I planned to go out fast in the first half and I always said I would be happy to run a course record. If that translated to a world record, so be it.”

What does 2023 hold for the man they call The Greatest? We are excited to find out!
