Enjoy the big vistas of Big Sur

If you are looking for a scenic coastal backdrop to your next mission to score some Age Group World Ranking points, you can’t go too far wrong by heading to the coast of California.

The Big Sur International Marathon is, quite simply, an iconic California marathon. The only running race to travel along this stretch of pristine coastline along Highway 1, portions of the route are designated as a National Scenic Byway, from Big Sur to Carmel, California.

This point-to-point marathon features rolling hills through the redwood forests of seven California State Parks, and is one of the largest rural marathons in the world. After back-to-back cancellations, the race is slated to return April 24, 2022.

The centerpiece of the course is the iconic Bixby Bridge, located at the halfway point of the race, where runners can enjoy the unique site and sound, accompanying the crashing waves, of a tuxedo-wearing concert pianist playing a Yamaha Baby Grand piano.

In addition to being one of the most scenic road races in the world, the Big Sur Marathon holds a special place among the hearts of runners who have conquered the 26.2-mile race due to the difficulty of the course.

Participants tackle over 2,000 feet of elevation gain from start to finish. It’s only after cresting the peak of Hurricane Point that you’ll start gaining some downhill momentum, with one of the hardest climbs in any road marathon behind you.

An event that boasts such beauty also takes its environmental responsibilities seriously. The Big Sur Marathon Foundation is committed to producing a zero-waste event and partnering with socially responsible brands and organizations. Historically, the Green Team has diverted between 92% and 98% of all race weekend waste through recycling, donating, and composting.

The AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group World Rankings comprise a one-year qualifying period during which athletes in nine separate age groups can compete in marathons across the world to earn ranking points.

At the end of the qualifying period, the top ranked runners in each age group will be invited to the AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group World Championships. The 2022 season of the AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group World Rankings will feature a record-breaking 312 marathons spanning 89 countries and six continents.
