Episode 70: 1 Man. 2 Continents. 17,000km… Behind Jamie Ramsay’s Adventure Across The Americas

It's 17,000 kilometers from Vancouver to Buenos Aires, you'll cross 14 countries, and you've got just over a year to do it. Does anyone fancy running it…?

Jamie Ramsay traversed two continents in 367 grueling days nearly a decade ago, and he's told the story of his adventure in a new book entitled "Running The Americas."

He joins us on Marathon Talk this week to detail his masterclass in resilience, pushing boundaries, and what he learned about himself!

Jamie's book is available to buy here: https://www.jamieramsay.net/

Also, on this week's show, we pore through the finalized stats from THAT brutally blistering London Marathon and discuss how you can best prepare for the heat on your next summer run…

Read the article mentioned in this week's episode: RUNNING WRITINGS: Calculating the effects of heat and humidity on marathon performance.

Episode highlights

“I've said it here on Marathon Talk before that, as you're obsessively refreshing your weather app for those critical training runs or for race day, really just consider that information part of the strategy of moving forward.” - 10:20 - Deena Kastor

“Unsurprisingly, the heat was the main explanation for this year’s performances. In 2024 the average temperature was 13 degrees, perfect compared to this year's much warmer 22 degrees.” - 14:30 - Martin Yelling

“I find the mentally challenging bit is when I’m NOT doing an adventure. I need a framework where I continue to push myself, learn about myself, grow and develop.” - 33:00 - Jamie Ramsay

“I’ve run the equivalent of 500 marathons, and while the marathon’s great, the training is the fun part.” - 41:05 - Jamie Ramsay

“I’ve done 54,000km of human-powered travel now, and I don’t think I’ve ever had a proper negative interaction with a human being.” - 45:30 - Jamie Ramsay
