Hug aiming for hall of fame display

Marcel Hug will be inducted into the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON Hall of Fame on Friday night but the Swiss star still intends to write a few more chapters in his incredible story.

The 39-year-old will attend a glittering ceremony at Brandeburg Gate as the city continues to build towards Sunday’s marathon.

Forty-eight hours later he will fly through that same landmark with the competition most likely trailing in his wake.

Hug is synonymous with Berlin. He has won here an astonishing nine times, going back to 2011, and should make that double figures on Sunday.

The Silver Bullet is showing no signs of slowing down either and comes to Berlin having obliterated the course record in a dominant win in Sydney.

That victory pushed him further ahead in the AbbottWMM Elite Series, which he sits atop with 91 points, 26 ahead of Tomoki Suzuki.

Marcel Hug is flanked by Manuela Schär and Tatyana McFadden

Barring disaster, Hug will pull further ahead of his Japanese rival who is not racing in Berlin.

The women’s race is headlines by two greats of the division, with Manuela Schär and Tatyana McFadden both boasting long periods of dominance in their illustrious careers.

Like Hug, Schär is part of the Berlin furniture, having won here six times and few would bet against a Swiss double.

America’s McFadden is a decorated athlete, having won New York five times as well as eight Paralympic gold medals.

A good performance on the roads in Berlin could see her break into the top five in the Elite Series.
