Hug & Schar sweep wheelchair races in Berlin

Marcel Hug recorded his 10th BMW BERLIN-MARATHON victory to underline his dominant position at the top of the men’s AbbottWMM leaderboard.

The Swiss champion stormed away early in the race on a warm morning in the German capital to create a gap of more than two minutes by the halfway point on a course he knows so well.

His winning time of 1:21:46 was more than six minutes ahead of long-time rival David Weir, who broke clear of Jetze Plat in the final 10 kilometers to register another podium finish in his storied career.

Hug also clocked the quickest time in the Flying 400 section and has now won the maximum three of the intermediate sprints in this series, meaning he cannot collect any further additional bonus points but can block his rivals from doing so.

Hug now also has the upper limit of four victories in this year's series, which means he has hit the maximum points haul already.

His fellow Swiss star Manuela Schär made it a double for their nation, winning in a time of 1:35:08 and plundering the eight bonus points for a 33-point haul from the race.

There was drama behind the champion with British duo Jade Hall and Eden Rainbow Cooper joined by American legend Tatyana McFadden in a sprint to the line for second place. Hall edged that battle, with Rainbow Cooper having to settle for third and McFadden missing out on the podium by three seconds.

Schär’s success is her first win since 2021 and elevates her to third in the AbbottWMM Series XVII leaderboard with Chicago and New York City still to come.

The women’s battle for the series remains in the balance, with the USA’s Susannah Scaroni leading Catherine Debrunner, and Schär now snapping at their heels.
