Mary Keitany defends championship; Stanley Biwott wins men's race in 39th running of TCS New York City Marathon

NEW YORK CITY – Nov. 1 – Mary Keitany (KEN) is again a TCS New York City Marathon champion, with her 2:24:25 win today.  Stanley Biwott (KEN) is the men’s champion with a time of 2:10:34.

The Abbott World Marathon Majors Series IX leaderboard changes with this race; as Keitany now joins Mare Debaba of Ethiopia in first place with 41 points.

On the men’s AWMM leaderboard, Eliud Kipchoge (KEN) still leads with 50 points; Yemane Tsegay (ETH) moves to third place with his 5th place NYC performance today.

The AWMM Series IX will conclude after the Feb. 28, 2016 Tokyo Marathon, and a male and female champion will each receive $500,000.  Current, complete standings can be found here.

Keitany, 33, the winner of the 2011-2012 World Marathon Majors title, traveled through Central Park looking relaxed and confident, and shaved almost a minute off her time from her 2014 New York City win.  The second place winner was Aselefech Mergia (ETH), with a time of 2:25:32.  Tigist Tufa (ETH) was third in 2:25:50.

This is 29-year-old Staney Biwott’s first time atop the podium since his 2012 Paris Marathon win.  He took fifth in the 2013 New York marathon, and the AWMM veteran has notched fourth and second place finishes in the 2015 and 2014 Virgin Money London marathons.

Having earned 25 points today, Biwott is now in 5th place on the AWMM Series IX leaderboard at 29 points.

Biwott’s Kenyan countryman Geoffrey Kamworor took second place with 2:10:48.  Lelisa Desisa, of Ethiopia, came in third at 2:12:10.
