The humble banana has long been a friend to the runner.

Want to run in the morning but woken up with a ravenous hunger? The banana will quell the emptiness without giving you a bloat that means you need to wait an hour before heading out the door.

Starving after a run and nothing easy to hand? Spotting a banana in your fruit bowl is like discovering an oasis in the desert.

But it’s not just the banana in naked form that can bring us happiness. If you’ve never swirled up a couple of your ageing yellow friends with a few berries and a scoop of yoghurt to create a glass of smoothie goodness, what’s wrong with you?

Then there’s banana bread, possibly the greatest man-made invention since the wheel.
