New York to host 2025 Age Group Championship

The TCS New York City Marathon, produced by nonprofit New York Road Runners (NYRR), will play host to the 2025 AbbottWMM Marathon Tours & Travel (MTT) Age Group World Championships.

The championship race will make its return to the United States after visiting Chicago in 2023 and taking place within the TCS Sydney Marathon in 2024.

Each year, over one million athletes are now ranked globally from more than 375 marathons across the world in the AbbottWMM MTT Age Group World Rankings.

The fastest among them will be eligible for an invitation to accept a place in the 2025 championship race which will be making its New York City debut.

“New York City is such a fitting home for our championship,” said AbbottWMM CEO Dawna Stone.

“It is one of the most global cities in the world and the marathon is already a huge attraction for runners from hundreds of different nations.

“We are thrilled that the best age groupers on the planet can now aim to run for the title of Age Group World champion within this iconic event.”

There will be 2,500 places available to qualified athletes from the rankings, with the rankings closing on December 31, 2024. Qualifiers will then need to confirm their interest in entering the event in early January in order to receive their invite and complete registration.

Previous championships have seen national and world records broken in various age groups, with eight different nations producing champions in 2023. They included the USA’s Jeannie Rice, who set a new F75-79 world record in Chicago with three hours, 34 minutes and 32 seconds.

“The TCS New York City Marathon – the best day in New York City – transforms lives and builds communities,” said Rob Simmelkjaer, CEO of NYRR.

“We are excited to invite the best age groupers out there to run in a world championship through the city’s five boroughs, and we look forward to welcoming them in November 2025.”

Athletes who register for the championship event will receive a special program of pre- and post-race events across the weekend and an additional world championship finisher’s medal. Additionally, starting today, athletes who have already qualified can pre-book Marathon Tours & Travel’s (MTT) exclusive 2025 Age Group World Championship Package risk- free.

“As the first destination MTT took runners to more than 45 years ago, it is fitting that we will play such an important role as sponsor of the 2025 AbbottWMM MTT Age Group World Championships in New York City.  We look forward to hosting many athletes from around the globe to this prestigious event,” commented Jeff Adams, President, MTT.
