When Martin Lel won the 2007 ING New York City Marathon on November 4 he also became the first man in history to win the Flora London Marathon and ING New York City Marathon in the same year.
Two women – Grete Waitz and Wanda Panfil – had also won London-New York City calendar year doubles with Waitz accomplishing it in both 1983 and 1986.
Women have scored doubles in each of the six possible spring-fall Big City marathon combinations. However there have been no same-year doublers for men at Boston-Berlin, and London-Berlin.
Waitz is the queen of the same-year multi-winners. In her remarkable 1983 campaign, besides London and New York she took the World Championships gold medal that summer. She is the only marathoner, male or female, to win three majors in one year. – Marty Post
