Hug and Scaroni dominate in NYC

Marcel Hug and Susannah Scaroni continued to exert their dominance on wheelchair racing after they both delivered in style to win the TCS New York City Marathon.

Hug and Scaroni had already wrapped up the Abbott WMM Elite Series after winning in Chicago and the pair crowned their respective seasons with crushing wins in New York.

For Hug, the win was his seventh in New York and his sixth in succession this season, having won each Major since Boston in the spring.

The Swiss athlete initially had Britain’s David Weir for company and the pair were wheel-to-wheel during the opening three miles.

But Hug pulled away soon after and was almost a minute ahead at the ten-mile mark. It became something of a procession from there.

He extended his lead over Weir by a further minute over the course of the next five miles and by the 20-mile mark was almost three minutes clear.

Hug eventually crossed the line in 1:30:16, a huge 3:53 ahead of Weir, who himself was dominant in securing second place, more than a minute ahead of Tomoki Suzuki.

Scaroni’s victory was her second in succession in New York City and was never really in doubt after she exited Varrazzano-Narrows Bridge in first place.

The American was 2:22 ahead at halfway and finished 5:43 ahead of Tatyana McFadden who just edged out Catherine Debrunner.
